Mud, fire, patience, and your own two hands.

Kilnward is a shared ceramics studio with small classes, open wheel time and a shop of pieces fired in our own kilns.

A speckled clay vase stands on a pottery wheel beside a sponge and tools in a sunlit ceramics studio.

This week at the studio

Pick a day and grab a seat. Aprons, clay, firing and glazing are all included.

Six weeks from lump to mug

  1. 01

    Wedge and throw

Clay kneaded, centred and pulled up into a shape on the wheel.

  2. 02

    Trim

Leather-hard pieces turned upside down and given a foot.

  3. 03

    Bisque

First firing to 1000 °C makes the clay hard and thirsty for glaze.

  4. 04

    Glaze

Dipped in our own oatmeal, celadon or tenmoku glazes.

  5. 05

    Glaze fire

Second firing to 1260 °C. Then the best moment: opening the kiln.
